SEATTLE, Wash. – Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:

• Ben Gamel, OF, activated from the 10-day disabled list.
• Aríel Miranda, LHP, optioned to AAA Tacoma.

Gamel (#16) will be in uniform and available for tonight’s (7:10 pm PT) game against the Houston Astros at Safeco Field.

Gamel, 25, was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a right oblique strain on March 28 (retroactive to March 26). He began his rehab assignment on April 5 with high-A Modesto, where he hit .294 (5×17) with 6 runs, 1 double and 4 walks in 5 games. His rehab assignment was transferred to AAA Tacoma on April 10, and he went on to bat .278 (5×18) with 4 runs, 1 double, 5 RBI and 4 walks in 5 games with the Rainiers. The 5-foot-11, 187-pound outfielder appeared in 4 Cactus League games with the Mariners this spring, batting .250 (3×12) with 2 runs, 1 triple and 1 RBI.

Gamel appeared in 134 games with Seattle in 2017, batting .275 (140×509) with 68 runs, 27 doubles, 5 triples, 11 home runs and 59 RBI. He made 127 starts in the outfield, 4th-most by a rookie in club history. After beginning the season with AAA Tacoma, he was recalled by the Mariners on April 26 and went on to hit safely in 40 of his first 53 games with the club, batting .353 (72×204) with a .410 on-base percentage and a .500 slugging mark.

In parts of 2 Major League seasons with New York-AL (2016) and Seattle (2016-c), Gamel is a career .268 (149×557) hitter with 29 doubles, 5 triples, 12 home runs and 64 RBI in 167 career games. The native of Neptune Beach, Fla., was acquired by the Mariners from the Yankees on Aug. 31, 2016 in exchange for RHP Jio Orozco and RHP Juan De Paula. He made his Major League debut with the Yankees on May 6 vs. Boston. Gamel was selected by New York in the 10th round of the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Bishop Kenney (FL) High School.

Miranda, 29, made his 2018 Mariners debut last night in a start against the Houston Astros. He did not factor in the decision, allowing 1 run on 6 hits while walking 4 and striking out 5 in 5.0 innings pitched. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound left-hander was recalled from AAA Tacoma prior to yesterday’s game. He has made 1 start with high-A Modesto this season (April 6), allowing 5 runs (1 earned run) on 7 hits and 2 walks while striking out 5 in 5.0 innings pitched. He also made 1 start with AAA Tacoma (April 11), tossing 4.0 innings and allowing 3 runs on 5 hits while walking 3 and striking out 2.

In 2017, Miranda was 8-7 with a 5.12 ERA (91 ER, 160.0 IP) with 137 strikeouts and 63 walks in 31 games, including 29 starts, with the Mariners. It marked his first full season in the Major Leagues, as he led the club in starts and innings pitched while ranking 2nd in wins and strikeouts. In parts of three Major League seasons with the Orioles (2016) and Mariners (2016-c), Miranda is 13-9 with a 4.29 ERA (117 ER, 223.0 IP) with 186 strikeouts and 85 walks in 44 career appearances (40 starts). A native of Havana, Cuba, he originally signed with Baltimore as a non-drafted free agent on May 27, 2015. He was acquired by Seattle from Baltimore in exchange for LHP Wade Miley on July 31, 2016.
