Lummi’s Caleb Revey wins weekly WIAA honor

RENTON, Wash. – The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association announced its WIAA/Wendy’s Athlete of the Week winners for Week 1 (Aug. 27 – Sept. 3), Wednesday.

Each week throughout the school year, the WIAA recognizes varsity athletes who exhibited an outstanding performance for the previous week (based off of nominations). All varsity level students in good academic standing at their schools are eligible to receive the WIAA/Wendy’s Athlete of the Week Award. Students may win the award once during any given academic year.

Nominations are open to athletic administrators, coaches, fans and members of the media, with a weekly deadline of Tuesday at noon PT.

Week 1 Winners
Sam Huard, Kennedy Catholic, Football (SO)
Huard threw for 552 yards and tied a state record by tossing 10 touchdown passes (9 in the first half) passes in the Lancers’ season-opening 72-20 win over Chief Sealth. He was 19 of 31 passing for the game and connected for five touchdowns in the first quarter.

Sierrah VanGesen, South Kitsap, Soccer (FR)
VanGesen, a freshman, scored the game winning goal in her debut for the Wolves in a 2-1 victory over Peninsula.

Orin Patu, Rainier Beach, Football (SR)
Patu had a great defensive game last week for the Vikings with 12 tackles, two sacks, four hurries, three tackles for loss, one fumble recovery, and one blocked field goal.

Olivia Fothergill, Mountain View, Soccer (JR)
Fothergill recorded a hat trick in the Thunder’s 4-2 victory over R. A. Long.

Gabriel Dinnel, Washougal, Cross Country (SR)
Dinnel won the Ultimook Invitational small school division (25+ teams) in Tillamook, Oregon for the third straight year. He also ran faster than all of the large school runners, and his time of 16:20 smashed the course record by 26 seconds.

Madeline Wolff R. A. Long, Soccer (SR)
Wolff scored two goals and provided one assist during the Lumberjills’ 7-0 win over Hudson’s Bay. She also contributed defensively and controlled the midfield for the shutout.

Kieran Kershaw, La Salle, Football (JR)
Kershaw led the Lightning to last week’s victory over 2A East Valley. The captain quarterback had 14 carries for 106 yards and four touchdowns. He was also 13 of 16 passing for 164 yards and a touchdown (0 INT).

Anna Yrjanson, Seton Catholic, Volleyball (JR)
Yrjanson put up strong numbers in last week’s five-set loss to 3A Hudson’s Bay, including 16 kills, eight digs, and six serving aces.

Emeron Geiser, Friday Harbor, Football (SR)
Geiser rushed the ball 44 times for 356 yards and two touchdowns in last week’s opening game against South Whidbey. He also lead the team with nine tackles (2 tackles for loss), to go along with an interception, a fumble recovery, and recovered an onside kick.

Caleb Revey, Lummi Nation, Football (JR)
Revey played well in his opening battle with Tacoma Baptist, as the Blackhawks put points on the scoreboard with 40 seconds left, and won 58-50. He finished with 190 yards rushing (19 carries) and 3 touchdowns, while completing 25 of 37 passes and connecting on 4 touchdowns. Revey also added 5 two-point conversations, 17 tackles, and 3 sacks.
