Coutesy of WWU Athletics

NAMPA, Idaho – Western Washington University sophomore forward Daulton Hommes scored a game-high 29 points, including seven of the team’s season-high 14 three-pointers, to lead the Vikings to a 95-84 road victory over Northwest Nazarene Saturday night in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action in the Johnson Sports Center.

Hommes (Lynden, WA/Lynden Christian) was 10-for-19 from the field and connected on 7-of-10 shots from 3-point range. Junior guard Trey Drechsel (Woodinville, WA/Cedar Park Christian) added 25 points and 9 rebounds, and senior forward Deandre Dickson (Easton, CA/Bakersfield College) had 19 points and 8 rebounds. Sophomore guard Trevor Jasinsky (Camas, WA) rounded out WWU’s double-figure scorers with 12 points, all coming in the second half.

The Vikings snapped a three-game losing streak, which followed a 10-game winning streak, to improve to 16-6 overall and remain in 2nd place in the GNAC with an 11-3 league record. NNU falls to 11-9 overall and 7-7 in GNAC play.

“Our offense came alive tonight and our guys had an energy that was contagious,” said head coach Tony Dominguez, who is 128-49 in his six years at the helm of the Vikings. “We were very determined to play as hard as possible and play with a sense of urgency.”

In a fast-paced game that saw both teams shoot over 50% for the game, it was the Vikings hot hand from beyond the arc that paced the victory. Western made a season-high 14 3-pointers, shooting 56.0% (14-for-25) from long range. Overall WWU shot 51.6% from the field (33-for-64).

WWU held a four-point lead at 88-84 with 2:58 remaining in the game, when Hommes helped put the game away with his seventh 3-pointer of the game to extend the lead back to 7 points. Drechsel went 4-for-4 from the free throw line down the stretch, and the Viking defense did not let the Nighthawks score over the final 2:57 of the game to seal the 11-point victory.

NNU senior forward Maurice Jones led the Nighthawks with 26 points, matching Hommes with a 7-for-10 night from 3-point range. Junior guard Obi Megwa added 22 points and redshirt freshman guard Sam Roth contributed 16 points on 7-for-8 shooting.

The Vikings took a one-point 48-47 lead into halftime, in a half that featured five tie scores and two lead changes. WWU led by as many as 7 points at 26-19 with 9:41 remaining in the half, but NNU answered with a 7-0 run to level the score. The Vikings had a 10-2 run after trailing 30-29 to go up 39-32 with 3:18 left in the half, but NNU again answered with a 7-0 run to pull even at 39-39.

Hommes led all players with 20 first-half points, shooting 7-for-15 from the field and 4-for-7 from 3-point range. Drechsel added 15 points on 5-for-6 shooting, including a stretch of 7 consecutive points in the last minute of the half. Jones and Megwa each had 14 points for the Nighthawks.

The back-and-forth affair continued throughout the first part of the second half with three tie scores, including 68-68 with 11:04 remaining in the game. WWU redshirt junior guard Siaan Rojas (Concord, CA/Santa Rosa JC) broke the tie with a 3-pointer to give the Vikings the lead, but NNU battled right back to grab a one-point lead at 75-74 following a Jones 3-pointer. Hommes answered with a 3-pointer of his own to give the Vikings a 77-75 lead, sparking a 5-0 run. From that point on WWU would not trail, with Hommes connecting on three of his seven 3-pointers down the stretch.

Jasinsky led WWU with all 12 of his points in the game coming in the second half, followed by 11 points from Hommes and 10 points from Drechsel.

The Vikings (15-6, 10-3) return home for a pair of games in Carver Gym next week, hosting Simon Fraser on Tuesday and Montana State Billings on Thursday. Both games will tip-off at 7 pm on WECU Court.
