Djokovic, Murray open with wins

LONDON (AP) — Andy Murray made a triumphant return to Wimbledon. Traditionally playing the first match on Centre Court as men’s defending champ, Murray breezed past David Goffin in straight sets. Last year, Murray became the first British man to win Wimbledon in 77 years. Now he’s bidding to become the first to retain the title since Fred Perry in 1936.

Top-seed Novak Djokovic had little trouble in his opening match, winning in straight sets. Also advancing were sixth-seed Tomas Berdych and seventh-seed David Ferrer.

Second-seeded Li Na and former No. 1 Victoria Azarenka eased into the second round. Five-time champ Venus Williams claimed her first Wimbleon victory since 2011 knocking off Lauren Davis.

American Sloane Stephens dropped her opening match to Russian Maria Kirilenko 6-2, 7-6. The loss ends Stephens’ streak of reaching the second week at six consecutive Grand Slam tournaments.

First day play wasn’t completed because of rain.
