ANACORTES, Wash. – The Coast Guard rescued a man after his boat capsized and he became stranded on the deserted Huckleberry Island in Padilla Bay.

Gordon Hay was reported missing Monday night when the 68 year old didn’t return to the Fidalgo Marina in Anacortes after an outing.

The Coast Guard says it deployed several Bellingham response boats as well as helicopters from its Columbia River sector and Canada.

Crews found Hay’s capsized boat, but weren’t able to find him for another five hours.

Hay was wearing a swimsuit and a lifejacket and had made his way to Huckleberry Island where he was able to flag down rescuers.

He was taken to a hospital in Anacortes.
