BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University freshman Brody Bonfilio has been named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week after tying for individual medalist honors at last week’s Notre Dame de Namur Argonaut Invitational.
Bonfilio (Boise, ID/Bishop Kelly) carded a 3-over-par 75 in the final round, and birdied his final hole to force a sudden-death playoff with Cal State San Bernardino’s Cody Hall. Bonfilio parred the playoff hole, while Hall recorded a birdie to win the playoff.
Overall Bonfilio finished the 54-hole tournament played at Poppy Ridge Golf Course in Livermore, California at 1-under-par 215. He opened the tournament with a bogey-free 6-under-par 66, and then shot rounds of 74 (+2) and 75 (+3). He tied for the tournament lead with 12 birdies.
Bonfilio becomes the first WWU player to at least share a portion of an individual tournament title during the regular season since Anthony Allen tied for 1st place at the Saint Martin’s Invitational Sept. 18-20, 2014.
The Vikings are off this week for final exams and return to competition March 26-27 at the SoCal Intercollegiate hosted by UC San Diego at Carlton Oaks Golf Club in Santee, California.
Bonfilio becomes the second Viking to earn GNAC Golf of the Week honors this season, joining teammate Ethan Casto (Snohomish, WA) who earned the award for Feb. 26-March 4 after finishing 2nd at the Bay Area Invitational.
