The Bellingham Bells are excited to announce the signing of a pair of right-handed pitchers to the 2018 roster. Bryce Mulcahy of Lane Community College and Davis Baillie of Washington State University will be joining the Bells’ rotation for the upcoming summer.
Mulcahy is a six-foot two-inch sophomore at LCC. During his freshman campaign, Mulcahy pitched in 22 games out of the bullpen and picked up a 1-3 record with a 1.98 ERA. He was the primary closer for the Titans, saving nine games and striking out 27 in the 22.2 innings that he worked.
Mulcahy was a two-way player for the Titans in 2017, hitting .254 in 126 at-bats. He drove in 20 runs and stole six bases and played a handful of positions. He was named to the 2017 Northwest Athletic Conference All-Tournament team.
This season, Mulcahy was moved to the starting rotation and in his first start went three innings allowing just two earned runs while striking out five. He did not factor into the decision for the Titans.
“Bryce Mulcahy is a hard throwing right-hander who has been very successful in a closer role but has the stuff to be used in most any capacity,” Bells’ pitching coach Jim Clem said. “He has a three-pitch mix and with his experience, gives us a guy who is used to pitching late in ballgames. Bryce will make a great Bell. He’s a proven pitcher, but besides that, his enthusiasm and positive attitude will be a big asset to the team. We are very excited to have Bryce on our roster.”
Mulcahy graduated from St. Helens High School in St. Helens, Ore.
Baillie is another big right-hander the Bells are adding this summer. The six-foot two-inch righty is currently in his redshirt sophomore season at WSU. Baillie did not plan to redshirt as a freshman but after 6.1 innings in which he did not allow a run or a hit, suffered an injury and was forced to take his redshirt season.
Last season, Baillie appeared in seven games out of the bullpen and went 1-0. He worked 7.1 innings with a 9.82 ERA after joining the team in mid-April. His best outing of his collegiate career so far was against No. 1 Oregon State on May 20, 2017 when he threw a quick scoreless inning.
This season will be Baillie’s first full season of work and through the first two weeks of the season he has already made three appearances. He has not factored into the decision in any contest so far but has worked five innings. Baillie has shown great control at the plate in 2018, as he has yet to walk a batter and has recorded six punch outs.
“Davis Baillie is a big right-hander who is a proven strike-thrower and can fill multiple roles for our team,” Clem said. “It will be great to have a Coug in our clubhouse again. Davis has been a two-way player during his baseball career, but now concentrates only on pitching. No question, we’re excited about what he can bring to our team. We expect Davis to be a key pitcher for us, and because he is a high character guy, he’ll be a great fit on our team too.”
Baillie graduated from Woodinville High School and was one of the top players in his area as a senior. In his senior season, he went 5-1 with a 0.61 ERA and was named WHS most valuable player of the year.
Baillie and Mulcahy will join a very strong Bells’ rotation that will open their season on June 1 in Kelowna.
