BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University sophomore forward Anna Schwecke has been named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the period of Dec. 18-24, announced Tuesday by the conference office in Portland, Ore.

Schwecke (Evergreen, CO/Colorado-Colorado Springs) earned player of the week honors after she earned All-Tournament Team selection at the Viking Hoops Classic. She averaged 14 points and 10 rebounds as the Vikings went 1-1 in the tournament at Carver Gym.

Schwecke was one of five WWU players to score in double figures in last Monday’s 90-59 win over Texas A&M International, finishing with a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds, and also adding 3 assists, 3 steals and 4 blocks. In last Tuesday’s 78-62 loss to No. 3-ranked West Texas A&M, Schwecke led the Vikings with 12 points and 8 rebounds.

For the season the sophomore is averaging 7.0 points, 8.4 rebounds and 1.3 blocked shots per game. Among GNAC leaders she is tied for 2nd in rebounding average, 2nd in blocked shots, tied for 7th with a 50.0 field goal percentage (31-for-62) and tied for 3rd with three double-doubles.

This is the first GNAC Player of the Week honor for a Viking this season, and the first in the career for Schwecke who transferred to Western from the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs this season.

The Vikings (5-5, 1-1 GNAC) return to conference play this weekend hosting Alaska Fairbanks (4-5, 0-3 GNAC) on Friday (12/29, 7 pm) and nationally-ranked Alaska Anchorage (10-1, 3-0 GNAC) on Sunday (12/31, 4 pm) on WECU Court at Carver Gym. Both games will be streamed live online at WWUVikings.com/Live with Doug Lange calling the action courtside.
