In an effort to improve early literacy and keep kids with overdue books coming back to the library, the Whatcom County Library System will stop charging fines for late children’s materials starting the first of the year.
County Library System Director Joan Airoldi says that while late fees will not be assessed for overdue books, reminders will be sent and a replacement fee will be charged if the item has not been returned within 60 days.
She also warns that adult collection items charged on a child’s library card will still be subject to late fees.
