Senate Committee Visits Proposed Coal Terminal Site

BELLINGHAM, Wash.  (Metro)  -- State lawmakers visited the site of the proposed Gateway Pacific Terminal at Cherry Point yesterday morning.

Project developer SSA Marine led the Senate Environment Committee on a tour of the planned coal-shipping terminal west of Ferndale.

Senator Doug Ericksen, the ranking Republican on the committee, says lawmakers are aware of the concerns over fish and coal dust, but he believes those concerns will be addressed in the environmental review process.

Officials last week began accepting public comments on what should be studied in the environmental review of the project.

A public hearing on the study will be held in Bellingham later this month.
