Self Defense Ruled After Bellingham Man Pushed Off Balcony

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- A Bellingham man won’t face charges in a confrontation that left a neighbor man dead.

Early on January 31, officers were called to the Maplewood Junction Apartments in the 2800 block of Maplewood Avenue, on a report that a man had been thrown from a balcony.

Daniel Savage, a resident of the apartment building, told officers he heard someone vomiting outside his apartment and confronted 38-year-old James Lacey, who also lived in the building.

The argument became heated, with both men pushing each other and exchanging blows.

Lacey was eventually pushed against a railing and fell to the pavement below.

He later died from head injuries.

After speaking with numerous witnesses and reviewing evidence, prosecutor Dave McEachren says he has determined that Savage used reasonable force in self defense and won’t face any charges.
