Riot Rattles Whatcom County Jail

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- Contractors are making repairs at the Whatcom County Jail after six inmates started a riot that shut down one of the jail's housing units.

Sheriff Bill Elfo says at about 9:30 Wednesday night, the men armed themselves with metal parts ripped from the jail’s deteriorating concrete walls, using them to smash windows, pry locks from cell doors and cause other damage.

Elfo says a crisis team was able to bring the riot under control within an hour.

The six accused in the riot will face additional charges for the jail uprising, and one of the men was hospitalized with a leg injury.
