Mark Scholten

MarkScholtenAs a child what did you want to be when you grew up?
When I was really young I wanted to play one of the Big 3 professional sports, but there turned out to be a bit of a ‘lack of talent’ issue. By about high school I decided I wanted to be the one broadcasting the games and that has turned out pretty well.

What is your hometown?
Born, raised and lived my whole life in Bellingham

Sports-related accomplishment you are most proud of?
Aside from pitching in a 9-iron from about 110 yards on a golf course in
Winthrop a few years ago, all my athletic accomplishments are softball related. I’ve been a part of about a dozen tournament winning teams, as far back as 1991 and as recently as this past summer. There’s no better way to spend a weekend.

What did you do before Radio?
Not to brag, but I turned down a chance to become a manager at the Dollar Store at Bellis Fair mall to commit full-time to radio all those years ago. I had worked there about a year during college and believe it or not, they were sad to lose me.

Sports star you’d most like to meet?
I’d have to go back to the olden days for this one…definitely ’70s NBA icon George ‘The Iceman’ Gervin. My favorite athlete as a kid and still the reason I wear #44 in softball to this day. And yes, I had his legendary poster on my wall during my formative years.

The best song to get pumped up before the big game is?
There is only one true ‘get pumped’ song as far as I’m concerned…”Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor. Loved it in Rocky III and still listen to it when it’s needed.

If you could go anywhere in the world where would you go?
I’d probably have to go to the Motherland and visit Holland. I know for a fact I’d fit right in over there. I hear there’s a Scholten on every block.

Best concert you’ve ever been to?
The best concert in the history of the world was KISS on their reunion tour putting the make-up back on in 1996. I grew up with the make-up wearing, fire-breathing KISS but they took the make-up off before I could see them live. When they got the original line-up back together and played only old songs on the reunion tour it might have been the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me.

TV show you absolutely never miss?
The funniest show on TV is Family Guy, easily. Doug and I make at least one Family Guy reference on the Zone every day. My guilty pleasure is the Real World on MTV. I know it’s not meant for guys my age but I can’t stop watching it.

What is your idea of a great night out?
It probably involves some form of loud music somewhere. Pick your type…local band, 80’s band back on tour, tribute band, whatever. I’ll follow them to Seattle or Vancouver or Portland or wherever I have to go to see my favorites.

Your biggest fear?
For most guys I think it’s bugs, but not me. One word: snakes. And the smaller the scarier. I got traumatized by seeing them in my Dad’s garden when I was a kid. I’m still not very good around them.
