Local Group Tries To Save Long-Standing Summer Camp

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- Local boy scouts could lose a long-standing summer camp near Maple Falls, but a group is trying to save the camp and preserve it for future use.

Camp Black Mountain has been losing $50,000 a year, and the Mount Baker council of the Boy Scouts of America is expected to either sell the property or suspend the camp and come up with a plan to stop it from losing money.

But Russ Dzialo with the Friends of Camp Black Mountain says the camp has been losing money because of poor management.

He says the camp still has a lot of potential...

The group on Monday presented a proposal to the Boy Scouts to retool the program away from a summer camp and toward a year round ‘outdoor facility.'

The local council of the Boy Scouts is expected to consider the plan at a meeting this morning.
