Whatcom County Police and border agents are heeding U.S. Drug Czar warnings to pay close attention to a potential influx of a cheap version of the painkiller Oxycontin coming across the border.
The generic version of the drug is illegal in this country, but is expected on Canadian pharmacy shelves in January.
Whatcom County Sheriff Bill Elfo says that our community has a big problem with opiate based drugs.
While newer versions of oxycontin are crush resistant, the generic version is not, and officials are concerned about possible overdoses caused by snorting the drug.
