Gender Wage Gap Wide In Washington

Washington State -- New numbers from the Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics shows the pay gap between men and women in Washington is one of the widest in the nation.

Officials say that in 2011, women in Washington made just over $740 per week on average while their male counterparts made nearly $1,000.

Bureau of Labor Statistics’ economist Amar Mann says the pay gap is partly due to the fact that men dominate the state’s high-paying high-tech jobs, while a large number of women in Washington work in community service and the nonprofit sector.

Washington’s wage disparity ranks 48 out of the 50 states and the District of Columbia.
